The APS CheckShot Survey-While-Drilling ("SWD") system provides low-cost mud pulse telemetry "single-shot" services. The system promotes drilling efficiency through the rapid, reliable provision of accurate real-time survey data without the need for additional well site personnel.
Operated by the drill crew without outside assistance, the CheckShot will provide azimuth and inclination data at the required accuracy for "straight hole" drilling operations. Should the survey indicate that a correction is required, the tool can be reconfigured while downhole to a steering mode, continuously transmitting tool-face readings.
The tool includes a simple, inexpensive directional sensor package, a reliable, battery-operated pulser* and a small, robust surface decoder. The shock-isolated system is contained in a beryllium copper or high-strength steel pressure barrel.
The new survey system incorporates a number of novel and innovative features:
- The highly reliable APS Pulser assembly is unique in that it can be easily converted from fixed mount to retrievable, providing critical flexibility.
- Customized electronics provide basic functionality while meeting the required accuracy specifications.
- CheckShot can be switched into an MWD mode capable of providing steering information without a time-consuming trip.
- The surface system presents the data in a simple control and display module. A compact strip chart printer is available to print out surveys, diagnostic and troubleshooting information.
