APS Technology Ships 500th Rotary Pulser
Independent MWD/LWD Service Companies Log Thousands of Hours Downhole with New Design
Wallingford, CT and Houston, TX – June 23, 2008 – APS Technology, Inc., a leading provider of innovative technologies for drilling performance, announced today that they had shipped their 500th rotary mud pulser. The unique, patented design, has been fielded by dozens of independent MWD/LWD service companies since its initial release in 2003.
APS's current design incorporates several improvements which deliver even greater reliability and performance including a new brushless DC motor with stationary windings and no commutator or brushes; a new low-power motor controller with improved feedback control, diagnostic memory, and shock/vibration resistance; improved shafts and seals; and better serviceability.
Several independent MWD/LWD service companies noted that they have had customers specifically request the APS rotary pulser for high-flow application where a clean wellbore was required for hydrofracturing in the horizontal section, or for high LCM applications which would jam other pulser designs.
APS rotary pulsers can run in collars from 3-1/8 to 9-1/2 inches with only a change of valve parts and flow subs. This simplifies inventory management and allows MWD/LWD service companies to run MWD in a full range of hole sizes with lower capital investment. The pulser is a 'plug-and-play' with the 8 cell/28 volt or 10 cell/36 volt medium-rate batteries used in popular MWD systems. The pulser's built-in diagnostics capability provides downhole operation data during regular maintenance cycles.
"APS's commitment to continuous improvement has led to increased reliability and lower power consumption in our rotary pulser," said John Hickey, MWD Product Line Manager at APS Technology. "Customer feedback, which leads to design changes, is an integral part of our continuous improvement process, and we are delighted to have our most demanding customers fielding these units."
Retrofit kits are also available for upgrading first-generation APS rotary pulsers.
