The APS CheckShot Survey-While-Drilling ("SWD") system provides low-cost mud pulse telemetry "single-shot" services. The system promotes drilling efficiency through the rapid, reliable provision of accurate real-time survey data without the need for additional well site personnel.
 |
| The
new survey system incorporates a number of novel
and innovative features: |
| • |
The highly reliable APS Pulser assembly is unique in that it can be easily converted from fixed mount to retrievable, providing critical flexibility. |
| • |
Customized electronics provide basic functionality while meeting the required accuracy specifications. |
| • |
CheckShot can be switched into an MWD mode capable of providing steering information without a time-consuming trip. |
| • |
The surface system presents the data in a simple control and display module. A compact strip chart printer is available to print out surveys, diagnostic and troubleshooting information. |
|
Operated by the drill crew without outside assistance, the CheckShot will provide azimuth and inclination data at the required accuracy for "straight hole" drilling operations. Should the survey indicate that a correction is required, the tool can be reconfigured while downhole to a steering mode, continuously transmitting tool-face readings.
The tool includes a simple, inexpensive directional sensor package, a reliable, battery-operated pulser† and a small, robust surface decoder. The shock-isolated system is contained in a beryllium copper or highstrength steel pressure barrel.
