FlowStat™ is
an electronic switch that employs a proprietary algorithm
to detect flow
by monitoring the pressure fluctuations generated by the
rig mud pumps†. The sensor has no moving parts and
can operate reliably under adverse drilling conditions such
as drillstring vibration and lost circulation, both key advantages
over alternative designs. Potential applications of this
rugged, fit-for-purpose device include battery-powered MWD
tools where power conservation is a key issue for optimizing
battery life and extending the time tools can remain in the
hole before battery replacement is required.
